Tony Sweeney

In 2018 the Lune Cycle Racing Club was looking to organise a suitable race to
commemorate the life of our President Tony Sweeney who had past away in January. For over 25 years Tony was the club secretary, treasurer and event organiser, in effect
he was the Lune Racing Cycling Club. Tony was one of the army of volunteers in British sport that give their time for free and without whom sport in this country would not exist. Tony worked tirelessly for cycling as a race official and helping to bring the Salt Ayre cycle track to Lancaster and which continues to be a great credit to the city. The club decided that a perpetual trophy would be awarded to the first North West rider to finish in a designated race, in 2018 that race was the regional championship and James Gullen of the JTL-Condor team was a worthy winner. The first edition of the Lancaster Grand Prix was the 2nd winner of this trophy by NW legend Ian Bibby. The third winner in 2022 was James Wordsworth, Leeds Uni CC.
